Projects in Market Analyzer allow you to run a TAM / SAM / SOM analysis to estimate how big your market is, how much of it you can realistically serve, and how much you can win. Start from a company universe you've already defined and get a sized view you can share with your team.

What TAM, SAM, and SOM mean

Term

Stands for

Question it answers

TAM

Total Addressable Market

Who could buy your product if you reached every company that fits the broad category?

SAM

Serviceable Addressable Market

Of the TAM, who can you actually serve given your product, geography, and target segments?

SOM

Serviceable Obtainable Market

Of the SAM, who can you realistically win in the near term?

Each layer is a subset of the one before it: TAM is the largest set and SOM is the smallest.

Before you start

  • You need access to Market Analyzer

  • Decide how you want to define each layer. For example, TAM might be all companies using a given product category, SAM might narrow that to your target regions and company sizes, and SOM might narrow it further to accounts showing buying signals.

Run the analysis

  1. Open Market Analyzer and go to Projects

  2. Click Create project

  3. Choose a name for the project

  4. Define your TAM.

    1. Set the broadest filters that describe your market (for example, industry, or technology installed). [Describe the actual controls.]

  5. Define your SAM.

    1. Add filters that reflect who you can serve (for example, region, employee count, revenue). These narrow your TAM.

  6. Define your SOM.

    1. Add the filters that reflect your realistic near-term opportunity (for example, intent signals or fit criteria).

  7. Review the results. [Describe what's shown: company counts, spend/revenue estimates, visualization.]

Read your results

  • Company counts show how many companies fall into each layer.

  • The ratio between layers shows how focused your targeting is. A very small SOM relative to SAM may mean your criteria are too narrow; a SOM close to SAM may mean you haven't prioritized.

Tips

  1. Start broad with TAM and tighten step by step, so you can see how each filter changes the size.

  2. Save or export your analysis to share with sales, marketing, or leadership.

  3. Revisit the analysis as your product or target segments change.
